5 Caribbean islands for a wellness getaway

By: Tom Marchant

Avoid the wellness crowds in Bali and opt for sun salutes on the white sands of The Caribbean instead; these five isles can more than deliver. Already synonymous with laid-back lifestyle, good vibes and barefoot luxury, The Caribbean has come a long way in terms of clean cuisine and holistic activities, complete with an array of lux wellness hotels to soak, spa, sip, and sleep. Here are five Caribbean islands that we see as up-and-coming wellness destinations.

Saint Lucia

This stunning isle has been growing on the wellness radar for a while, and for good reason. As well as endless yoga and Pilates, you’ll have the 2,619-foot Gros Piton mountain at your feet for a calorie-busting hike that ends in lush Instagram-worthy views. Be sure to make the most of the volcanic isle’s indigenous healing properties such as volcanic sulphur, turmeric and ginger in your smoothies and spa days.

Aruba

If scudding across brilliant blue waves aboard a windsurf or kitesurf is your idea of great wellbeing, then head to Aruba, where trade winds ensure prime conditions year-round. The wellness specialists at Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort can create your own tailor-made yoga and fitness itinerary for you. A clean-eating scene is flourishing here, with juice bars and vegan options gracing the menus and you can even dine responsibly on fresh lionfish ceviche – helping to save the nearby ocean reefs from these threatening species. In need of some healing? Hit the spas for a rejuvenating Aloe treatment or try an age-old herbal remedy with a curado healer.

Turks & Caicos

These islands have the landscapes that you dream about when you think ‘Caribbean’. Fewer people venture here, so you’ll have deserted beaches to yourself as you feel inspired by the stunning clear blue sea and sky. The Amanyara adds an incredibly stylish backdrop to soak in the views as you go Zen in their outdoor yoga shala or bliss out with a rose crystal face massage. Plus if you’re looking for animal encounters, these islands lie in the migration path of Atlantic humpback whales which you can spot during your well-earned cocktail (or mocktail) sundowner on the beach.

Mustique

Just three miles long and half a mile wide, the privately-owned island Mustique is just as intimate as it is exclusive; which is why it has drawn elite clientele in search of a true retreat. Unspoiled beaches ringed by aquamarine waters set the tone for a holistic experience, but bed down in The Cotton House and their Wellness Centre will keep your mind, body and soul in tune with yoga, meditation, and personal training sessions.

Cayman Brac

For a rustic retreat into nature, the rugged Cayman Brac feels a world away from busy modern life despite being just a short seaplane from the buzz of Grand Cayman. Healthy living comes naturally in the boutique Le Soleil d’Or which is set on 20 acres of an organic farm on the edge of the cliff bluffs. Wake up and revitalise with farm-fresh juices, flowers, herbs and eggs and spend your days rewilding yourself hiking and taking a dip in natural pools to the soundtrack of waves gently breaking on the rocks.
