Day 5: Oklahoma City to Amarillo, Texas

Driving from Oklahoma City to Amarillo was a long but fun day on Route 66. I started off with a quick jaunt around the capital city. I know it wasn’t enough time, but I at least wanted to see some of Oklahoma City before rejoining Route 66. I definitely have to come back though, because what I saw was gorgeous. Before we left we changed our Nissan Armada Platinum for a Nissan Rogue, and I’m excited to drive it for the rest of the trip.

Today was all about lots of what I call little stops. Pulling off in nearly forgotten towns to take a photo or visit a gift shop. That being said, we also visited what has so far been the best museum on Route 66, the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton, OK. Curated expertly. it’s also one of the most engaging museums of any kind I’ve visited around the world and a nice surprise after many sub-par museums.

Driving from Oklahoma into Texas, there were so many fun little stops, and at every point we met many warm and friendly people, eager to share their experiences along Route 66. Almost halfway into the drive, I’ve learned that there’s a certain kind of fraternity that exists among those of us who are involved. Whether you live/work along the Mother Road or are driving its entirety, it’s a tie that binds and has helped me make many new friends in a very short period of time.

We ended our drive in Amarillo at one of the most remarkable Courtyard by Marriott properties I’ve ever seen. Housed in a historic 1930s building, the class and style of the era is on full display and staying here has been an absolute treat.

Starting tomorrow though we start what is perhaps the most iconic portion of Route 66 as we enter the American Southwest proper.
