Albuquerque New Mexico

Day 8: Santa Fe to Albuquerque, New Mexico

Today’s leg of Route 66 was not a long one, but it sets us up really well for the next few days. Even on the backroads of Route 66, the drive from Santa Fe to Albuquerque only takes a couple of hours, but once you arrive into the city you realize why it’s so important for the trip. Albuquerque strongly embraces its Route 66 history, and for decades the city was a highlight for the through-drivers on the Mother Road.

There are traces of this history all around town, but most notably on Central Avenue in the Nob Hill neighborhood. Vintage neon signs, retro motels and classic diners line this stretch of Albuquerque, the neighborhood one of the first centralized shopping areas west of the Mississippi. There’s a lot more to see and do around the city of course, including the Sandia Peak Tramway. I always love getting panoramic views of new places I visit, and there’s nothing better in the area than Sandia. It stretches from the northeast edge of the city to the crestline of the Sandia Mountains and has the world’s third longest single span, finally taking visitors to 10,000 feet.

While in Albuquerque I’m staying at the Albuquerque Marriott, a great place for me to get some rest and prepare for the final legs of my journey. With all of the amenities I’ve come to love from Marriott, it delivers on every level.

Stay tuned for the next few days of the drive, it’s going to be amazing.
