One of the most important things you can have in an extreme off-roading situation is a winch, on your front bumper. This can be used to tether your truck to a nearby tree and provide the needed force to pull your truck out of a difficult hang-up or mud pit. If you want to tackle the most difficult sandstone trails, a winch is not only recommended, it's a necessity.
Heavy-Duty Suspension
Rolling over sandstone slopes is very different than driving along a smoothly paved road. To adjust for the increased impact, you'll need a high-quality off-roading suspension system. Having an adequate suspension will not only protect your vehicle from damage, but will also make the ride more comfortable for you as a driver.
First Aid Kit
On an off-roading expedition, an unfortunate reality is that an injury is always possible. Take along a first aid kit with all of the supplies you would need to treat common injuries. Though you probably won't need it, it's far better to be safe than sorry when you're in a remote location too far away from medical help to rely on anyone but yourself to take care of you.
Extreme Off-Roading Tires
If your vehicle is to handle the rough, rocky sandstone trails, it needs to be equipped with tires that can withstand such a hard and uneven surface. Your tire options will, of course, depend on your truck, but a large-diameter tire with reinforced sidewalls is essential. A deep tread isn't quite as important in this context as it is where swamps or muddy hills are involved, but it's still a good feature to have, as most sandstone trails will still have wet areas you'll need to get through.
Off-roading may not be for everyone, but for those who are willing to do it, it's a huge amount of fun. Of course, you'll need more than these four things to be truly prepared for extreme trails, but these are the bare essentials.
