This week we explore North Carolina’s legendary Pinehurst Resort and learn more about the Historic Hotels of America.

Pinehurst Resort was founded by Boston soda fountain magnate James Walker Tufts in 1895 and the first golf course opened shortly thereafter. Almost immediately the resort and area became one of the world’s great golf meccas, a reputation that persists to this day. Along with popularity came the need for hotel space, which is why construction on the Carolina Hotel also began almost immediately and when it opened its doors in 1901 it was the largest luxury hotel in the state. The Carolina was my luxurious home for the long weekend, and I honestly couldn’t hope for a better sanctuary.
Historic hotels have always been a personal favorite thanks not only to the incredible stories they have to tell, but the equally incredible level of luxury and service normally found in them. They hearken to a different era and it’s hard not to feel like a celebrity when you walk into their lobbies for the first time. Historic Hotels of America is the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation for recognizing and celebrating the finest Historic Hotels. Today, Historic Hotels of America has more than 300 historic hotels. These historic hotels have all faithfully maintained their authenticity, sense of place, and architectural integrity in the United States of America, including 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico and I always make a point to patronize one if I can.
Lawrence Horwitz
Based in Washington DC, Lawrence Horwitz leads Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide, official programs of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which include more than 300 of the most prominent historic hotels from across the United States of America and more than 320 of the finest iconic historic hotels in more than 46 countries worldwide. Historic Hotels Worldwide and Historic Hotels of America are dedicated to promoting historic preservation, cultural and heritage tourism, increasing the recognition of historic hotels, and increasing the awareness of the benefits from adaptive reuse developments. Since 2010, Horwitz has led the annual Historic Hotels Awards of Excellence, the only global awards program for recognizing the finest hoteliers, ownership, and historic hotels from around the world. An active traveler, he has traveled for work and pleasure to more than 70 countries as well as to the North Pole and Antarctica.
