Who can be an Approved Parent Sponsor?
Either of the following:
- Australian Citizen
- Permanent Resident Visa of Australia for at least 4 years
- Eligible New Zealand Citizen usually resident in Australia for at least 4 years
Other Requirements to be eligible:
- At least 18 years old
- The child of the applicant (be it biological, legal, step or in-law)
- No debt to the Australian Government
- Taxable Yearly Income is at least AUD 83,454.80 (if you can’t afford this, you can combine your partner or sibling’ s incomes to reach the threshold. Your income must be at least 50%)

- Can only sponsor 2 parents per household

1. Residence or Citizenship Documents
May include:
- Citizenship Certificate
- Passport Bio-page

2. Proof of Relationship
Copies proving that you are a child of the person you are sponsoring:
- Birth or Marriage Certificates
- Adoption Certificate
- Family Certificates
3. Financial documents – notice of Assessment by the Australian Taxation Office, please black out your tax file number before submission

- Australian Police Certificate issued by the Australian Federal Police

How to Apply to be an Approved Sponsor (for Sponsor)
STEP 1: Check if you are eligible as a Sponsor, and so is the one you are sponsoring.
STEP 2: Gather your documents and scan them to make it easier.
STEP 3: Follow these steps:
1. Log-in or Create an ImmiAccount.
2. Go to “New Application”
3. Select “Family” and then “Sponsorship for a Family Member (870)”
4. Answer the questions for your application.
5. Attach the documents needed.
STEP 4: Pay the sponsorship application fee of AUD 420. Please note of your Sponsorship Transaction Reference Number.
STEP 5: Wait for the decision. In case there is additional information needed, you will be contacted.
STEP 6: A decision in writing will be given to you with the Sponsorship Transaction Reference Number, Date the sponsorship is approved, and the Sponsorship Obligations. Give the TRN to your Parent who wants to apply.
How to Apply to get a Sponsored Parent Visa
This must be done within 6 months of the sponsorship approval.

STEP 2: Gather your documents and scan them to make it easier.
STEP 3: Follow these steps:
1. Log-in or Create an ImmiAccount.
2. Go to “New Application”
3. Select “Family” and then “Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (870)”
4. Answer the questions for your application.
5. Attach the documents needed.
STEP 4: Pay the initial application fee.
STEP 5: Wait for the reply of the immigration. You may be asked to provide biometrics and undergo a medical examination. You also may be asked for other documents. Please also pay the balance of your application fee.
STEP 6: A decision in writing will be given to you with your visa grant number, visa start date, and conditions. Keep a copy of the decision and book a flight to Australia!
