This week we learn all about the National Trust for Historic Preservation and their current initiative – Virtual Preservation Month. For more than 70 years the National Trust for Historic Preservation has worked to save sites around the U.S. that together share our cultural history. Virtual Preservation Month is a continuation of their annual Preservation Month, all online now given the current state of travel.

Founded in 1949 by Congressional charter, the National Trust for Historic Preservation supports the preservation of America’s diverse historic buildings, neighborhoods and heritage through a variety of programs, resources and advocacy. This week we’re learning not only about the incredible work conducted by the National Trust, but how they’ve adapted their popular Preservation Month program to the realities of 2020.
Since 1973, the May of each year has been devoted to Preservation Month. During the month local preservation groups, state historical societies, and business and civic organizations across the country celebrate Preservation Month through events that promote historic places and heritage tourism, and that demonstrate the social and economic benefits of historic preservation. Given the fact that the country is under quarantine orders for this year’s Preservation Month, the National Trust introduced Virtual Preservation Month.
Throughout the month of May, the National Trust is sharing the very best in preservation from coast to coast, offering 31 days of rich digital experiences at historic places to inspire, delight, and entertain. Whether coming from National Trust Historic Sites, Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios, or National Treasures, each day will unlock a new experience. You’ll wander the rooms of iconic houses, roam wide-open spaces, and peek behind the scenes at some of your favorite historic sites—all at your own pace. Katherine Malone-France
Since 2019, Katherine Malone-France has served as the Chief Preservation Officer of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In this capacity, she leads the organization’s programmatic work in field services, government relations, state and local policy, research, trainings, grantmaking, and the stewardship and interpretation of the National Trust’s portfolio of 28 historic sites.
