The elegant scenery offered by rustic towns, vineyards, green rolling hills with glorious golden sunset, picturesque towns make Tuscany a very attractive Region for tourism. From astonishing castles and ancient villas to rustic charming farms and vineyards, this region can make every tourist happy. It is also one of the world’s most notable wine regions that produces some of the most well known Italian wines such as Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino and Morellino di Scansano, Antonori etc. But Tuscany has far more than that.
Tuscany is the fifth biggest region in Italy with a population of about 3,700,000 and in 2019 there were 48.5 million overnight stays. Of course Florence with its marvel beauty, masterpieces Renaissance art and architecture is not a city to be skipped, and neither are Siena, San Gimignano, and Pisa. But in the province of Siena, a natural area with clay hills “crete senesi” captures the attention of many worldwide photographers for it is magical scenery.
The Crete Senesi Landscape was submerged by the sea until about a million years ago. The clay composition is due to its ancient nature rule of sea basin where sand and slush settled. After the withdrawal of the waters, the erosion process of these soils formed numerous small dome-shaped formations and, with the sun exposure, the sodium sulphate emerged giving them their characteristic light color. Thanks to these natural upheavals, the landscape of the Crete now offers a unique scenario. It can be considered a “world on its own” and defined as a “lunar” lunar-like landscape.
This ancient farmhouse, between Crete Senesi, is one of the most well known locations of this area of Siena. It has been beautifully restored and is one of the most visited Tuscan farmhouses by photographers. It is an icon of this area.
