Today’s blog post is brought to you by our US Marketing Executive, Emma Neely, who’s fresh off a Contiki Christmas market tour of Europe! She’s here to bring you the top tips on what to have of taste at when visiting these markets.
From drinking warm Glühwein under the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree, to filling your stomach with a Bavarian pretzel the size of your face, it’s hard not to love Christmas market food. Though traditionally Christmas market food is usually German, you’ll also find Swiss, Austrian and Hungarian options as well!
Wurst
Brätwurst, feuerwurst, and currywurst oh my! German sausage comes in many sizes and flavors – it’s a Christmas market staple. It’s worth a taste on any Christmas market excursion!
Chimney Cake (Kürtőskalács in Hungarian)
A festive Hungarian treat. It’s perfectly crisped on the outside and soft on the inside. From cinnamon sugar to sprinkles, Christmas markets usually have a few different toppings and flavors to choose from!
Roasted Almonds (Gebrannte Mandeln)
“Chestnuts roasting on an open fireeeee” 🎶 The heavenly smell of candied nuts is another irresistible Christmas market food you HAVE to try!
Lebkuchen
A very traditional gingerbread dating back several centuries is the perfect gift for your loved ones back home!
Lángos
Made of fried dough, you can load this bad boy up with cheese, sour cream and really whatever you want. This Hungarian savory treat truly is mouth watering!
Raclette
Scraped straight off the big wheel, this heated cheese (usually topped with potatoes, onions, or bread) is pure magic. Pro tip: don’t wear tight clothing. You’re stomach will thank us later!
Spieß
A dessert consisting of fruit and marshmallow skewers covered in chocolate. Even the smaller of foods are still AMAZING!
Although Christmas is just around the corner, it’s not too late to plan a trip to explore some of Europe’s best Christmas markets for next year! Check out Contiki’s Winter Wanderer or the Winter European Discovery for a taste!
