Not that it takes much convincing to visit such a fantastic island, after all the totally awesome sun, sea and sand are going to win most people over, but if you are going to head over on a bucket list type holiday, you really want to make sure you are seeing all the vital elements. So here are the top five reasons to visit Barbados.
The rum
OK, it does have a certain Captain Jack feel about it, but to be fair, you cannot overlook the rum. It is considered the drink of the island and distilled at varies places on the island including Mount Gay distillery. There are plenty of rum tours and a chance to sample various varieties, so be sure to leave space for your duty-free allowance. It may surprise you to learn that one of the most significant rum distilling sights is actually St Nicholas Abbey where you can also get some delicious food and take in the history of the island.
The beaches
We just do not get such amazing white sands and crystal blue waters in the UK. Of course, these are further enhanced by the slightly more impressive temperatures too. Laze or play on some of the most stunning beaches in the world. There are actually 60 to choose from on this remarkable island, with many offering fantastic water-based sports and others geared more towards beach hut bars and relaxing in the sand for those who are seeking a quieter experience.
The Holetown Festival
This kind of requires you to head over to Barbados in mid-February but it is a spectacle well worth seeing. Street parties, parades, food, market stalls you name it, this festival showcases all that is local to the area and gives you a real insight into traditional island life. You will be able to buy freshly cooked local foods and of course rum or some other liquid refreshment to keep you sustained while you watch the fantastic parades. There will be plenty of chances to show off your folk singing and practice your dance moves if you are feeling brave.
The local wildlife
There are some amazing animals on this stunning island, and who can blame them for wanting to call such amazing surroundings home. If you are a water lover, you can get up close to the hawksbill and leatherback turtles, or for those who prefer dry land why not feed the monkeys on their favourite snack of sugar cane. You might also be lucky enough to hear the fantastic whistling frogs, and of course, the waters are packed with fish and other creatures.
Oistins Fish Fry
Famed across the area, this is one of the best eateries in this small and bright fishing town. On a Friday night they fire up the grills, and people gather in droves to sample the freshest, just caught fish prepared in front of them. The enormous outdoor barbecue event is a must-see, and there are so many types of fish for you to try you will simply love it.
