Going to Africa? Your first thought is probably safari, right? What a dream to roam the Savannah plains in your jeep looking for the big five; lions, rhinos, leopards, buffalo and elephants. But hey, Africa has so much more on offer! Here’s our top 5 African destinations that you won’t want to miss.
1. Morocco
Morocco is full of beautiful towns and villages you’ll be desperate to see, but Fes and Marrakech are not to be missed. You’ll feel all kinds of Assassin’s Creed as you explore and barter in the markets and medinas. If you’ve got some time (and $$$) to spare, take a trip into the Sahara for a night under the stars staying in a Berber camp. Or, if you’d rather a more authentic form of transport, you can finish the journey across the dunes by camel! Don’t forget to try the food, just thinking about tagines is making us drool.
2. Mount Kilimanjaro
It’s Africa’s biggest mountain, we couldn’t not talk about it… If you want an active holiday then this is for you. Enjoy rainforest slopes, glaciers and a tower of lava as you hike to the summit. We would recommend a night-time hike on the final leg so you can end your trip with the sunrise from Stella Point. After all that, head back down to Moshi Camp for a celebratory (and very necessary) hot shower and drink!
3. South Africa
South Africa is full of adventures from inland safaris, to beach life, forest exploration and wandering the Garden Route. Cape Town is a must for any visitor – especially if you’re an adrenaline junkie because out here you can try the world’s highest bridge bungee or abseil Table Mountain! For those less eager to throw themselves off things, how about a wine tour or maybe a trip to meet the cute penguins at Boulder Beach. Last but not least is Johannesburg where you can enjoy traditional Braai dinners followed by wildlife in the Kruger National Park. If you have time, head to Victoria Pools over the border in Zimbabwe for one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world.
4. Madagascar
Africa’s largest island is full of wild landscapes, village culture, beaches and lemurs that like to move it move it. This island is perfect for those looking for rustic charm and natural beauty.
Embrace local life in the rustic towns of Antananarivo and Ambalavao while enjoying the beach life in Ifaty, not forgetting the multiple national parks where you can see species of lemurs, chameleons and the rarely spotted blue boa. Must visits are the tombs of the Mahafaly and the extremely photogenic Baobab Alley.
5. Zanzibar
The spice islands of Zanzibar are a whole different world waiting to be explored. To fully understand the history of the island, we suggest a guided tour of the spice plantations – get ready for an explosion of the senses! After that, head to the UNESCO world heritage site, Stone Town before heading to the beach capital of Nungwi for scuba diving, relaxing and even turtle conservation! If you’re looking to get on the water, cruise on a Swahili boat and soak up the best vantage points in Zanzibar via the Dhow safari.
